The curtains were $24.99. On my Dave Ramsified budget, they were too much. Especially when I considered that I needed two for each window...24.99X2X3 = well...a lot! Plus tax. This shopping trip was yesterday and I left Target defeated, which often happens when I am in Target because I truly feel overwhelmed by all these ideas and, just, STUFF. What to do with it all? Can I use this wooden bowl in the kitchen section as a neato remote control holder on my coffee table? Or will people just think I'm nuts? And those charging stations...do the Butler's need one? Where would we put it? The questions are endless. So I usually walk back out to my car feeling depressed and undomesticated.
Back to the curtains. I called my oh so understanding husband who suggested that we have them made. Right. My mom chuckled when I relayed that idea. "Yes, so you can pay triple for the curtains!" Those were here exact words. So I looked forlornly at my uncurtained (and unlampshaded) sunroom last night and decided to just buy the curtains...one panel at a time.
This morning at work, however, my coworker started talking to me about making them myself using a little sewing tape and some elbow grease. And an idea started growing in my head...what if I learned to sew? And sewed not only curtains but all kinds of cute ideas like pillows and napkins and all other manner of cottony type fabrics.
I have to say that this is not a new idea to me. It's one I've toyed with ever since a girl I grew up with started her own online business selling handmade baby burp cloths and bibs in the CUTEST patterns I had ever seen. Why couldn't I do that? So today I researched some sewing machines and began looking for classes in my area. I think that I've found several affordable machines and have a couple of leads on some classes. This idea could actually become a possiblity! I mean, women of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds have been sewing for years and years. It's only until recently that it's become a rare art form. Not coming from a family of sewers (except for my grandmother, but she was more into cross stitching, which I do have a fondness for), I was never exposed to all the craftiness that goes along with an electric sewing machine and some bobbins. (I'm not real sure what bobbins are, but I'm going to learn, by golly!)
We'll see how this all turns out.
In other news I found the cutest little necklace today for $11.00.
